Uetani Lab. Introduction

Our research focuses on “Manufacturing” and “Technological development” (i.e., the value development such as analysis technology and utilization)” using polysaccharide nanofibers extracted from natural materials.

Natural polysaccharide polymers such as cellulose and chitin are biosynthesized as bionanofibers with a special extended chain crystal structure that cannot be synthesized artificially. In our laboratory, we are working on controlling the surface chemical structure of nanofibers, creating composite materials with organic and inorganic materials, and developing advanced analytical techniques in order to develop new highly functional materials that control energy propagation including light, mechanical force, and heat. Our aim is to conduct engineering research that “creates value” with an awareness of future user experience through consistent material design from micro chemical structure to macro functional properties, based on the historic industrial materials such as cellulose and chitin.
